There are several programs out there that claim that they can help children learn everything from basic reading and writing to complex math skills. And they claim to it all while kids play games. So that begs the question: are these computer software games the answer to parent’s prayers?
The complex answer is yes and no.
You should think about fun games where your children pretend to take care of an animatronic cat or dog. While they may excel at the game they are not really much. They can turn off the game whenever they want. In real life, the demand of a real animal is none stop. A cat doesn’t stop needing water just because your child is tired of taking care of them. Learning games are much the same. Edcuational game are a fun way to simulate learning. They offer a chance for your child to play and learn at the same time. However, these games will never be a substitute for an actual lesson. As interesting as games are, they do not offer the deep understanding that will come from children repeating their letters over and over.
However, educational games still bring something to plate. They may not be able to offer a complete lesson but they can be a fun alternative to a boring round of flash cards. Educational software should not be used as a soul way to teach but it can be used as a fun way to reinforce what is being learned. The great thing about educational games is that they are just that: games. If you are offering the chance to play some educational games rather than sit through a round of flash cards they will most likely look at that time as a reward rather than studying.
