With all the new technology that the internet has brought us a faster more convienent way to communicate. Email was designed with the purpose of being able to make sending information about work easier than having to track someone down using the telephone. However, with the spred of email popularity came the lack on professionalism between people who are emailing to each other. It no longer matters that people are communicating with their boss or a potential employer, they seem to take punctuation and correct spelling as a guideline rather than a necessity.
As the popularity of email has spreed, other technology has been added to email. However, just because the technology is there does not mean that it should be used. For example, there are very few reasons that you should have to use emoticons. Emoticons are the little faces that show various emotions. Obviously there were added because writing in script is very difficult to determineĀ a tone. However, when we are talking about sending emails in the professional world there is absolutely no reason to include an emoticon in your email. The same can be said for making print bold, a funny font or bold color. Remember that when sending emails that are work related you want people to take you seriously and making your emails look like your teenager sent them will not help you at work.
That being said, there is technology that has been added to email that should be used every time you send an email. One of the best technological advancements in email was to add spell check. Nothing implies that you are unfit for a project or should not be hired for a job like misspelled workds. Therefore, always take the time to spellcheck your email before pressing the send botton.
